Phoenix Suns vs Philadelphia 76ers Game Preview

Spencer Hawes nearly netted a triple-double in his game against Portland.

That’s right, Spencer friggin Hawes.

Now, it was probably a one time thing, but it’s still a scary thought for the Suns defence — a 7 footer dishing out assists like there’s no tomorrow is something to be aware of. The offensively capable-but-defensively deficient Philly frontline might struggle a bit against a probable lineup of Lopez and Gortat

So now comes that awful question: What have we taken out of the loss against New Orleans? What happened there?

The defence was solid. And by solid, I mean it backstopped a team that just lost Chris Paul and held them to 85. The problem wasn’t there, given the Suns should’ve been playing their regular run-n-gun.

The problem was everybody trying to do too much, prove that they are different than their scouting reports say. Whether it was Channing Frye trying to work in the post against Carl Landry or Shannon Brown giving up easy threes to play around with the ball. It was just plain wrong. This team has a system, and the players seem to want to scream “HEY, I LEARNED SOMETHING DURING THE LOCKOUT, LOOKIE HERE!” That’s not what you’re supposed to do. Look at Marcin or Robin. They trained with Hakeem, but didn’t force things in the post. They understood what the flow of the game is, a flow broken up by players constantly playing out of their roles.

Oh, and tonight will be an even worse night for wing ISOs with Andre Iguodala guarding one of them. The Suns have got to get back to their pick-n-roll based offence and use the defensive deficiencies in the Philadelphia frontline. They can’t try to show off some new skills they don’t really have at the cost of winning, though.

Do: Put Channing back to the three point line. Play a Twin Towers lineup. Possibly.
Do Not: Take the foot off the gas pedal when having a lead.
