Henry Abbott sent chills down my spine with a few simple words this afternoon on HoopSpeak Live (Episode 7). In response to fellow ESPN writer Kevin Arnovitz’ questions about the lockout, Abbott said he felt there were 18 owners he described as “hard-liners” – people who want to win, but want to do so while not going too far (or at all) into the red with their bottom-line.
This list included Mark Cuban, Ted Leonsis and Robert Sarver.
There, did you feel it? That chill?! It’s a harbinger of doom for the NBA. The same owner who’s notorious for being cheap (selling draft picks), wise in investment (employing one of the best training staffs in the league) and frivolous (see: Josh Childress’ contract) – ALL AT THE SAME TIME – now stands as one of the guiding forces in the immediate destiny of the league and as the Moirae of Steve Nash’s time as a Sun.
Fickle are the fates – but even they love the all-mighty dollar.
