The Phoenix Suns are reporting on their twitter feed that backup point guard Goran Dragic is feeling no pain in his foot and will return to the lineup tonight against the Utah Jazz.
Dragic cut his foot on a broken glass at the end of January and has been out of the lineup since receiving seven stitches to seal said injury. The Suns initially thought Dragic would miss only 3 games and signed D-League All-Star Zabian Dowdell to a 10-day contract to fill the void on the bench. When Dragic’s injury took longer to heal than anticipated, the Suns signed Dowdell for the remainder of the season.
The Suns went 5-2 in the seven games that Dragic missed. On the season, Dragic is averaging 14.7 points per 36 minutes with an assist percentage of 24.5% and turnover rate of 20.5%. In just 9 games (quite a small sample size), Dowdell has posted 12.1 points per 36, a 33% assist rate, and an 18.7% turnover rate. As the Suns come down the stretch and look to make the playoffs, coach Alvin Gentry may have a tough decision to make regarding his backup point guard. If I had to guess, I’d assume that Dragic will get the majority of the minutes once he shakes off any rust, but that Gentry won’t hesitate to put Dowdell out there with the second unit if Dragic isn’t as effective as one would hope.
