The Phoenix Suns waived 11-year veteran point guard Chucky Atkins Monday, according to a press release. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound consummate backup point guard was brought on Sept. 27 to battleand for the team’s third point guard spot.
Atkins played 40 games in Detroit last season and has played on eight different NBA franchises. He offered experience and knowledgeable veteran, but after averaging 1.0 points and 1.7 assists in 11.3 minutes in two preseason appearances, the Suns opted for youth in Janning (22) and Dowdell (26).
The Suns’ roster currently stands at 16, meaning two more players will probably be released before the start of the 2010-11 regular season. The battle for the third point guard is now between Janning and Dowdell.
