The Phoenix Suns waived 11-year veteran point guard Chucky Atkins Monday, according to a press release. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound consummate backup point guard was brought on Sept. 27 to battle Matt Janning and Zabian Dowdell for the team’s third point guard spot.

Atkins played 40 games in Detroit last season and has played on eight different NBA franchises. He offered experience and knowledgeable veteran, but after averaging 1.0 points and 1.7 assists in 11.3 minutes in two preseason appearances, the Suns opted for youth in Janning (22) and Dowdell (26).

The Suns’ roster currently stands at 16, meaning two more players will probably be released before the start of the 2010-11 regular season. The battle for the third point guard is now between Janning and Dowdell.

Feel bad for the guy (Chuckie Atkins), he was never the best but it seems as though he won’t recieve any other contract and out of the three, because he played the longest he would have the best basketball IQ.

Chucky has been in the league a long time, and after his performance last year and in this preseason, I’m sure he saw this coming.

As for the remaining roster spots, after watching Dowdell a little bit more, I have to say my intrigue has switched from him to Janning. Not because of anything positive about Janning, really, but simply because I don’t think Dowdell is an NBA talent.
