Lopez of course missed about seven weeks because of his ailing back before returning for the Western Conference Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.
According to ESPN’s Chris Sheridan, Lopez was “a long shot” to make the team anyway.
It’s certainly concerning that Lopez isn’t 100 percent being that he’s the Suns’ only true center, but at the same time if he’s not perfectly healthy then sitting out Worlds is absolutely the right call as great of an experience as this would have been.
Former Suns forward Amare Stoudemire, who was expected to be one of the stars of the team, will also miss Worlds because of issues getting his contract insured. Since the ink isn’t even dry on that deal, this in itself validates the wisdom of giving STAT five years at the max.
