Robin Lopez added to national team?

Robin Lopez made tremendous strides between his rookie and sophomore seasons.

But has he improved enough to represent his country in international play? Maybe so.

Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears is reporting that Lopez will join Amare Stoudemire and the rest of USA Basketball at the World Championships this summer in Turkey.

Lopez’s size and length could be a real asset in international play, but it’s a huge surprise to see his name before his twin Brook’s on the roster. In any case, Robin is expected to join the Team USA program, which Brook is already a part of.

Robin previously has been a part of the USA Basketball Select Team, which helped the senior Team USA squad prepare for the 2008 Olympics.

If Lopez does end up making the World Championships team, this would be an incredible learning experience as Robin prepares for a bigger role with Phoenix in 2010-11.

Michael Schwartz founded ValleyoftheSuns in October 2008 and is the owner/editor emeritus of the site. He is currently working toward his MBA in sports business at San Diego State University.
