Suns granted permission to talk to Dennis Lindsey

Dennis Lindsey appears to be No. 1 on the Phoenix Suns' GM watch list.

It is looking more and more like San Antonio Spurs assistant general manager Dennis Lindsey is the Phoenix Suns’ lead candidate for their GM vacancy.

ESPN reported Tuesday that the Suns have been given permission to speak to Lindsey after Thursday’s draft about the possibility of succeeding Steve Kerr as GM.

Lindsey, who has been with the Spurs since 2007 and held a position with the Rockets for 11 years prior to that, has been mentioned among the candidates since Kerr departed and appears to be Phoenix’s No. 1 option.

But 41-year-old Lindsey isn’t alone, as the report mentioned that Suns owner Robert Sarver is hoping to talk to Boston Celtics GM and former Sun Danny Ainge, former Nets assistant GM Kiki Vandeweghe and former Trail Blazers assistant GM Tom Penn.

The Arizona Republic recently reported that Sarver is looking for four candidates, and it appears that he has that with Lindsey in the lead, followed by Ainge, Vandeweghe and Penn.

There has also been a slew of other names thrown in the hat — Dave Babcock, Randy Pfund, Billy King, Neil Olshey and David Morway to name a few — but it’s looking like Lindsey is priority No. 1.

It’s been made clear that Sarver, head coach Alvin Gentry and Director of Player Personnel Todd Quinter will handle free agency duties, but depending on how talks go with Lindsey, that may change very soon.

Lindsey’s resumé

  • VP of Basketball Operations and Assistant GM in San Antonio since 2007.
  • Spent 11 seasons with the Houston Rockets where he worked his way up from video coordinator and scout to VP of Basketball Operations.
  • Was the lead candidate for the T-Wolves’ job before the 2009-10 season, but removed his name from the hat to remain in San Antonio.
  • Has been one of the coaches at Reebok Eurocamp for each of the last four summers.
  • Played four seasons at Baylor University, where he also earned his undergraduate degree.

Great read, though some macabre part of me (Probably the part that became a Suns fan in ’92) wants to pull for Ainge. He can stick around with Phoenix for a few years, then continue to work his old career trajectory westward, backtracking to the Kings or Blazers.
