Dragic excels against Spain

Goran Dragic played his best game of EuroBasket 2009 today against defending world champion Spain.

Coming off the bench, Dragic exploded for a team-high 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting while recording six steals going up against Spanish wunderkind Ricky Rubio in Slovenia’s 90-84 overtime loss to the mighty Spaniards. He added three boards and an assist in 27 minutes playing off the ball next to Slovenian point guard Jaka Lakovic.

Dragic led a comeback from 64-51 down against the squad that gave Team USA a run for its money in the Olympic Gold medal game last summer. Paul Coro reports that includes a 13-point fourth with four steals. Dragic helped send the game to overtime when Rubio fouled him down three with a second left by hitting the first and missing the second to allow a teammate to rebound and hit a game-tying putback.

For his efforts, EuroBasket2009.org named Dragic the “hero” of the game despite winding up on the losing end of things.

The loss dropped Slovenia to 2-1 in pool play, but Dragic’s club did enough to earn the top seed out of Group C by virtue of a better point differential than Spain. They will next face off against the top three countries from Group D for the right to advance to the medal round, starting with Lithuania on Saturday and continuing with Turkey and Poland in the coming week.

J-Rich on his way

Aside from international competitors Dragic and Leandro Barbosa, Jason Richardson was the only Sun not to return to Phoenix to scrimmage with the team this week.

That’s about to change, according to J-Rich’s Twitter account:

“Guess what ur boy is back. On my way to Phoenix to get ready 4 season”
