two things. the seven seconds or less formula was wildly successful and almost worked. in their breakout season, they were successful not just because of their offense, but they also played some defense as they were middle of the pack in defensive efficiency. the ones they say they never played d haven't learned to comprehend pace yet... maybe one day. the suns almost made it if it weren't for some heroics by kobe one year, and the extremely questionable officiating decisions during the spurs series the other year.

second, as a canadian, i think i might understand nash's situation a bit more. team loyalty is valued a lot more here whereas playing the marketplace is emphasized more in the usa (i could be wrong, but that's how i perceive it). he embodies the franchise's recent success, is a great ambassador of the game and would be happy giving it a shot with phoenix, despite the low probability of winning a championship.

Raja could win a ring with Phoenix if he got traded to Phoenix with Chandler and someone else for Stoudemire.

I think it's looked upon so negatively for guys like that because they were star players for championship contenders but just happened to have their primes align with the Jordan Era. I don't think there's any question that a ring with Kobe and Shaq, who had recently three-peated, wouldn't be the same as winning one as a franchise player. I think this argument only goes for superstars like Malone, Payton, Nash, Barkley, etc. If a Raja Bell goes somewhere and wins a ring next season, that's a different story.

I think it's weird that the Payton "cheap ring" grab is looked upon so negatively. Payton was coming off a brief stint with the Bucks after getting traded by the Sonics; is it so bad that he took a pay cut to be on the best team he could find?

Nash obviously understands that his 2 MVP awards were highway robbery and that there is no karma left with the basketball Gods for him - especially when it comes to a quest for a championship ring. Might as well stay put and enjoy the last few years of his over rated career. He may be the worst defender in the history of the MVP award - a CONSTANT liability whose MVP numbers were inflated by a system that made the fatal assumption that offense is the best defense.

It would be hard to believe this Suns team will be better than a team that won 62 games and earned the league's best regular season record. Then again, nobody thought the 04-05 Suns would be 29 games better than the 03-04 Suns. At the same time, I honestly think the Suns will outperform national expectations IF they stay healthy, Amare is motivated, etc.

is there anyway that this years team is going to be better than the original nash team with joe johnson, and marion? especially with nash and hill being older? it comes down to championship teams play defense and are disciplined, something that the suns have not been during the diantoni/gentry era.
