Shaq’s Suns have long since been eliminated from championship contention, the first time Shaq hasn’t reached the playoffs since he was a rookie, but there will still be major Shaquillian overtones at the 2009 NBA Finals, which start tonight in Los Angeles.
Will Kobe win his first title without Shaq and join the Big Aristotle and Tim Duncan as stars of this generation with four championships, or will Dwight Howard do what the Daddy never could in Orlando?
Shaq even has history with the coaches, having played and feuded with Phil Jackson in LA and Stan Van Gundy in Miami. He seems to be on OK terms with Jackson these days – after all, that drama was all marketing of course – but he had that memorable cat fight with “the master of panic” earlier this season.
Van Gundy hasn’t exactly panicked quite yet in dispatching the mighty Celtics and Cavs.
Anyway, a line has been drawn in the sand and Shaq is siding with Phoenix’s arch nemesis, those hated Lakers.
“thats right i am saying it today and today only, i want kobe bryant to get number 4, spread da word,” Shaq wrote on Twitter.
Not that Kobe even cares about tying Shaq in the titles department. Or so he says.
Anyway, here’s a neat little preview vid of the Finals with a little bit of Shaq talk mixed in produced by friend of the Valley Bryan Roy, who also runs TrueHoop’s Celtics Hub:
